| with everything you need for a fun weekend or day out. The most surprising
thing is the wonderful décor. The architecture and
surroundings are on a par with anything you see in Las
Vegas. You can wander the complex, gamble, shop, eat and
drink, all in high-class and attractive surroundings. It
really is a well thought out and tasteful place (OK slot
machines are not really tasteful, but you know what I mean).
No matter what your fortunes are
at the tables, you can always take
a break for a meal. The resort features
a number of high end restaurants,
as well as other places that cater
for just a quick bite.
We stopped by some of them and compiled
this short guide:
Jasper White's Summer Shack
Right in the heart of the
casino on the second floor The
Summer Shack is a great
place for a break. They serve some
of the best seafood to be found in
New England in comfortable and relaxed
surroundings. Prices are fair, especially
when you take into account the quality
of their product. Funky colors are
the order of the day, with some great
murals and caricature marine life
all over the walls. You can watch
your lobster or clam bake cook in
their open kitchen steamers or enjoy
fresh oysters and a wide range of
seafood, all ordered from one of
the large “catch of the day” blackboards.
This place is definitely worth a
visit.
Todd English's Tuscany
Tuscany is a superb Italian
style eatery. You enter through the
main architectural feature in the
center of the casino, a large rock
face and waterfall. The entrance
is impressive enough on its own.
You can grab a drink in the outside
bar at the foot of the falls or head
on inside for some of Tuscany's excellent
food. Todd English has a great reputation
and it's certainly well deserved
if the food here is anything to go
by. You can enjoy flat breads, pastas
and some of the signature grilled
and oven-baked entrees.
Michael Jordan's Steak House
and Sports Cafe
Just around the corner from
the Summer Shack you come across
a two restaurant complex. The first
Michael Jordan 23 – Sports
Cafe is an innovative and edgy sports
bar. Its main claim to fame, apart
from memorabilia of the great man
himself are a number of “sails” stretched
on frames that act as double sided
video screens for as many games as
you want. I am not sure what it's
like to see a football game backwards,
but given a great looking bar and
tasty bar food, I am not sure anyone
really cares. Definitely a place
to check out.
Right next door is the Michael Jordan's
Steak House. This is a high-end steakhouse.
Once again the décor is edgy,
featuring rich colors and leather
textures on all the walls. The booths
are especially nice. Food is – you
guessed it! - great steaks and chops.
The wine list looks great. Don't
expect to eat cheap here as prices
for this quality of meats are fairly
high, but once again you get what
you pay for and the food is excellent.
It's a sophisticated and comfortable
place that rises above the normal
sports franchise dining.
Rain
This place was a bit of
an enigma to us. The décor
is wonderful. The outside features
a wall of rainfall that acts as the
front of the restaurant. Once past
that there is a bar and an enclosed
dining room. They offer gourmet continental
dining. The surroundings are a cosmopolitan
environment of fabrics, polished
metals and cascading water.
Other Choices
If none of the above take your fancy or you just want a snack
you can find everything from a Starbucks to a Chinese restaurant. Click
on this link to see a complete list of the dining establishments
at the Mohegan Sun on their web site.
