Short Takes - Short Reviews From Past Issues
Spice of The Week
Olde Westport Chipolte Ranchero
Guide price: $5.00

This week we spotted a line of specialty sauces from the Olde Westport kitchen of Bill Peterson of Oakland Park, KS. A regular winner of "flavor" awards, Olde Westport has a wide range of flavors for every taste. Our tasters said that the featured Chipolte Ranchero, "Packed a punch and was long on flavor, without being bitter or cloying". You can order this and many other sauces online or by a toll free number (800.537.6470). Prices seem to be very reasonable, but as always watch out for shipping costs on small orders as the minimum is $5.50.

Review: Chef Walter's Clay Pots

Remember the 70's? If you do, then you will probably recall the Romatof pots or clay ovens that were all the rage back then. Even if you had one, I doubt that it will have survived years of yard sales and basement cleanings and has long since gone the way of all old kitchen knickknacks. Not to worry though, clays are back, big time, and they are brighter, better and fit right in with our low fat diets and don't look out of place in our design conscious world.

Interesting New Ideas
Bambara Restaurant, Hotel Marlowe, Cambridge
You probably have a frequent flyer card. You may even have a frequent coffee drinker card from Starbucks. I bet you don't have one for wine! The sommelier at Bambara, which is a fine restaurant in the Hotel Marlowe, by the Cambridge Gallaria, came up with this one. If you dine at Bambara and order some wine then you can get one of these cards. This entitles you to $10 off your next bottle. Neat idea and a lot better than the card I have
that gets me a free bagel. Bambara features a splendid wine list and contemporary menu with some very exciting dishes. Head on over and get yourself a card.
Interesting New Ideas
Gard'n Fresh Herbs
Gard'n Fresh Herbs are a great addition to your freezer. These herbs are fresh frozen within hours of harvest using a unique process to retain the full taste, aroma and color of the freshly picked herbs. We have tested both the basil and cilantro and found the aroma strong and the taste is almost as good as fresh. There are no preservatives used, so all you get is the herb. You can use these the same way you would use the fresh herb. So keep them on hand in your freezer - they will be ready when you need them.
Spice of The Week:
Chef Tom Douglas of Seattle
Guide price: $6.29
Fancy some baby back ribs tonight? Pop into your local supermarket for something to spice them up a bit and you will find a bewildering array of sauces and dry rubs all clamoring for your dollars. We came across a really stand out dry rub this week and want to share the love! "Rub with Love", a dry rub for ribs, is simply delicious. It's a medium spiced rub that turns ordinary ribs into something special. The rub has a deep turmeric flavor with a hint of chili powder. It's very highly recommended. We sourced this rub at Shaw's in Mansfield for $6.29 for the 3.5oz pot.
